DESCRIPTION:Playing cards pre-date the colloquial tarot as a sophisticated divination tool, starting as early 868 C.E. in China, and proceeding through Egypt, India, and continental Europe. With the advent of the printing press and later engraving, spanning from Italy in the 1300s into France, Germany, and the U.K., and later what would become the United States, playing cards have served as an accessible, cost-effective, symbolic, and traditional form of divination for centuries across cultures. They have also served as a folk form of magical resistance to oppression by the Catholic Church and other religious/state institutions.\nThis workshop will offer a brief introduction to using playing cards as both a divinational tool/magical object, as well as some light guidance in how to use the cards as part of spell work, particularly in the American hoodoo tradition of magic.\nNotes on Hoodoo: Hoodoo (also know as conjure, root work, tricking, etc) is a distinctly American folk magic tradition, born out of resistance to oppression and bondage. It is often associated with use by Afro-Americans, but truly was/is a working class magic for people of many racial and ethnic identities, historically and contemporarily. It is a co-mingling of African magical and cultural practices alongside Catholic and Protestant Christianities, Native American herbal lore, European folk customs, as well as Jewish, Asian, and Spiritualist folklore and beliefs. It became an integral part of American cultural fabric beginning in slavery, and proceeding through the U.S. Civil Way, emancipation, mass urbanization, and movement of settler-colonialism Westward along Turtle Island/North America.
